Leanne,
It's great that you are ready to do your research. It doesn't hurt to have a backup plan especially with fickle Ashermans!

Here is what I have found.

1) Agency fees approx 20k. I believe that includes finding a surro, psych eval, background check.

2) Lawyer fees: approx 2-4k. That would include paying your lawyer to draft the contract, paying a lawyer to review for the GS and also the pre-birth order.

3) Health insurance deductible so the surro's insurance doesn't exclude for surrogacy: approx 3k

4) Fertility clinic fees. Some have a bulk for tests including HSG, mock transfer. 4k plus how ever you arrange your IVF stuff (shared risk or pay as you go).

5) Surrogate fees: 20k for first time and up to 35k for experienced surrogate. That is their base pay you pay monthly at time of pregnancy confirmation for 10 months.

6) Surrogacy extras for monthly allowance once contract is agreed upon, other fees for medications, maternity clothes approx $250, food, gas and hotel for any travel, loss of wages if they work, fee at time of transfer (500-1500), fee for multiples and having a c-section can be a few thousand each, life insurance policy approx $200.

7) Escrow service to help with payment: approx $1000.

There are a few ways to reduce fees. Try to do as much yourself as possible. don't use an agency but use the web to try to find an experienced surrogate. I say experienced because that is best since it will relieve some of the worry off you since they will know the protocol. Maybe a surrogate you find would have some of the pre-screening already done and even the psych evaluation. Don't use an escrow service if you can avoid it and you are good with paying on time. Find unused fertility medications from a trusted source. You don't need a "surrogacy" lawyer per-say to do your legal work. Maybe you know a lawyer friend that could help at a discount. You can find sample surro contract on the web or an experienced surrogate might want to use her's from her previous surrogacy arrangements as a starting point.

I hope this helps! Experienced surrogates and intended parents please let me know if I'm missing anything!

We decided not to do the monthly allowance with our GS. Instead she tracks her expenses and sends us any receipts. It's more work for her perhaps but there are some months she isn't spending much money so it helps us save a little money there. Every little bit counts! Best to you if you end up going this route. It's a wonderful option!

Hi Everyone,

My name is sandy and im about to be a surrogate for my good friend in 10 days time (1st embrio transfer). Im in Australia and its illegal here for me to be paid to be a surrogate so interesting reading all the comments above.

Hi!

I heard that it is legal to cover expenses in Canada, up to $18,000 but I know of surrogates that have private arrangements and can profit from being a surrogate. :) I am looking for a surrogate in Canada... preferably Ontario. :)

Kim

I can understand medical expenses but do you know if it is legal to pay a surrogate for profit in Canada?

Have you been looking on line? If so could you please send me the web sites?

Thanks

Leanne

Hi Leanne,

How is your journey going? Have you thought any more about surrogacy? it's been a wonderful experience for us thus far. If you have any questions just feel free to ask.

I haven't looked too deep into surrogacy but my husband and I are curious what the estimated cost is. amount for medical and compensation to the carrier?

Thanks Leanne

I totally agree with  you Amie. My oldest sons are in college thanks to my first IPs. I work and have 4 kids at home so the comp fees are just to help with everything we have in our lives as well. I think its a beautiful thing to give someone a child and see that wonderful glow they have when they hold them for the first time & in return its easier for me to give my children a future (college) thats very expensive!!! I have heard some horror stories of surros being Overly demanding and wanting lots of extras I think the amount the IPs pay for medical and travel etc. just general fees is sufficent along with our comp fee all th extras in my opinion just are not neccessary. Im looking for IPs for my second journey as a surrogate and Ive found that it is a waiting game & also there has 2 B a match for the surro & IPs so its a lifelong bond whether u see each other ever again after baby!!! I thoroughly enjoyed it and Im looking forward to doing it again!!!

I am interested in beginning the gestational carrier process. Would anyone be able to recommend a good reproductive lawyer in NJ?

Thank you.

Hi Alex,
I believe attorney Melissa Brisman is in NJ and I've heard great things about her. She is a member of BTB too.
Good luck!

Hi Marni,

Thanks for the reply!  I actually looked into her services and she is a little to big for her britches, so to speak!  He fees are astronomical so I was looking for someone a little more reasonable and less big.  Any others?

Thanks again!

I would try calling her and maybe she can recommend someone. Have you found your IPs yet? Are you looking for someone to help you with that as well?
