NPR recently posted an interview with intended parents and their surrogate discussing aspects of their surrogacy arrangement and the birth of twins. Ties That Bind: When Surrogate Meets Mom-To-Be by Jennifer Ludden
I can honestly say that this audio clip really explains surrogacy especially from the intended mother perspective. Not intended father but the intended mother, the one who wants to be pregnant but isn't.
It really shows how "crazy" the intended mother can become. And I personally think it's "crazy" in a good way. The instant protective feeling the intended mother gets during the surrogacy pregnancy seem to relate to an instant bond over the welfare of her babies. Being out of control and not being the one pregnant brings on a roller coaster of emotions and sometimes irrational thoughts. But it's all with the best of intentions.
It can definitely put a strain on the relationship with your carrier. Even though you know your surrogate is doing the best she can to protect and grow you babies, and you chose HER for a reason, you can't help but worry! It's a very difficult situation especially for an intended mother who has had many losses and didn't have an easy time having children and feels like a positive outcome is still so hard to obtain even if your carrier is clearly pregnant!
I can totally relate to the intended mother in this clip.
Hope you will have a listen.
